Lecture 11: Introduction to Solidworks, Controlling DC Motors

Checklist: What you need to bring for this lecture

  • Laptop
  • Sparkfun Tinker kit
  • Digital multimeter
  • Miniature test clip adapters

Learning Objectives

  • Be able to control the speed of the DC motor in the Sparkfun Tinker Kit
  • Be able to create a hand sketch of the structure for the desktop fan
  • Be able to properly size the hole for the screws that hold the servo for the desktop fan

Lecture Videos and Support

  • Introduction to Solidworks and how to model 2D parts for desktop fan:
  • Video of laser-cutter and acrylic bending for fabrication of the desktop fan (4:26)
    Youtube Video
  • Most common errors for laser cut parts: PDF
  • Mandatory: take the online quiz 8 on D2L before coming to class. Make sure you play around with Solidworks and follow the video before coming to class.

In Class Hands-on and Lecture

Note that the motor driver in the Tinker Kit produced in Summer 2018 is different than the motor driver from the 2017 and earlier Tinker Kit.

The latest version (2018 and later) version of the Sparkfun Tinker Kit has TB6612 breakout board. If you have that version of the kit, then use these references

If you have the older version of the Tinker Kit, use these links

For either motor driver, these links should be helpful:

  • Reducing noise in your circuit: de-coupling
  • Soldering the DC motor wires: ppt
  • Video on stripping and tinning wires (0:33).

Solidworks for Students

Students in the Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science can download and install an educational version of Solidworks. You will need a computer running the Windows operating system.

From the Solidworks page on the CAT web site you will find two links

  1. Link to the download page on the Solidworks web site

The intranet page provides *School License ID* which is needed on the Solidworks download page

If you get lost, or if the CAT changes the structure of its web site, you can try these steps to find the Softare download pages

  1. Click on the Software for Users link
  2. Click on the Solidworks for Students link
